About Property

Discover a world where history meets luxury at the Jailhouse Inn's Botanical Suite, a unique getaway located in the heart of Elkader, Iowa. Once a limestone mansion built 150 years ago to house Clayton County's most notorious criminals, this beautifully renovated 5,000+ square foot estate sits on a 3-acre bluff, offering stunning views of the surrounding rolling hills.

The Botanical Suite is designed for romance and relaxation, functioning as the inn's version of a honeymoon suite. It features one bedroom with a four-poster queen bed and is adorned with charming antiques. The highlight of this space is the luxurious bathroom, which is approximately three times the size of the original jail cells. Guests can enjoy beautiful tile floors and a spacious air-massage tub big enough for two, creating a sanctuary that makes it hard to leave.

As a guest of the Botanical Suite, you have access to several shared areas of the mansion. You can utilize the gourmet kitchen and relax on the scenic patio overlooking the valley. For a truly unforgettable experience, explore the original cell block. This area is filled with authentic cells, historic evidence, and memorabilia. It is a perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine, challenge friends to shuffleboard, play various board games, or watch the big game on a large flat-screen TV. Don't forget to take your mugshot during your visit!

Elkader offers a wealth of local charm and adventure. The inn is located just blocks from Main Street's boutiques and restaurants along the Turkey River. Nature lovers can explore Pike's Peak, Backbone State Park, Effigy Mounds, or the Yellow River State Forest. Whether you are interested in trout fishing, floating the local river, visiting the Opera House, or hitting the links at a nearby golf course, the area provides endless leisure activities.
