Hawaii's 94 museums represent a vital part of the State's economy and are a major asset to tourism. A study to examine in-depth the impact of Hawaii museums on the State's economy, found that in 1996 museums produced a total economic impact of $339 million in economic output, 5,000 jobs and $142.5 million in household income for Hawaii's people.
Hawaii museums receive over 20 million visits annually, an estimated 67% of which are made by out-of-state visitors. The average tourist who visits museums is highly educated, employed as a professional, stays longer and spends more.
