Dubai - Driving

Dubai has an impressive first-class network of roads connecting all parts of the city and surrounding areas. Majority of roads have two to four lanes. Roads to all major towns and villages are excellent and an eight lane highway heads southwards from the city to Abu Dhabi. There are two bridges and a tunnel linking the two main districts of Dubai and Deira on either side of the Creek.

Unfortunately, driving standards do not match the quality of the roads. Many drivers appear insensible to the presence of other vehicles, and fast, close driving appears to be the norm. Accidents - some fatal - occur frequently and visitors are advised to drive defensively. Outside of Dubai, road signposts are rare, making a good road map essential. Car parks are operated by Dubai Municipality and cost Dh2 per hour. Two centrally located covered car parks are near the Spice Souk and Bani Yas Square in Deira.
