Thailand - Songkhla

Land of Songkhla Lake
Songkhla, an eastern coastal province, was formerly known as Singha-la (Lion) by Indian, Persian and Arabian merchants since the small offshore Cat and Rat islands had a somewhat leonine appearance from the sea. Hat Yai, a district of Songkhla, is better known than the provincial capital itself as the junction of communication and the gate welcoming Malaysian and Singaporean tourists to Thailand. To the north of Songkhla lies the huge Songkhla Lake, the largest body of inland water in Thailand. There is a major fish farming industry on the lake and the Khu Khut Water-fowl Park and bird sanctuary. The Tinsulanon Bridges span the lake for miles on the coast road north.
