Northeast of Thailand is made up of nineteen provinces and covers one-third of the entire country. It is commonly referred to as I-San, which denotes prosperity and vastness. 

Buriram, one of largest and most populated provinces in Isan, has a number of Khmer sanctuaries. Built on an extinct volcano, Phanom Rung Historical Park is a grand and majestic Khmer site over a thousand years old. Isan Kite Festival is held in the first weekend of December signaling the beginning of the cool season in Thailand.

Khon Kaen, the province of Higher literacy, has a fascinating cultural heritage. The majority of the population of Khon kaen belongs to the Phaw Thai ethnic group who migrated from Laos. Khon Kaen National Museum displays exhibits on ancient civilizations and artifacts found in the Northeast. Ubonrat dam is the largest multi-purpose dam in the Northeast.

Loei is a land of water and mountains and the only province in Thailand that has the dubious destination of the mercury plummeting to zero Celsius. Suan Hin Pha Ngam Park is a limestone mountain that has eroded over time to form an interesting shape, similar to that in Kunming in China.

Nakhon Ratchasima is the largest province in the Northeast. Phimai Boat Races takes place on the Moon River near the old Khmer city of Phimai during the second week of November. Khao Yai National Park is in four provinces featuring winding mountain ranges covered by virgin and other types of forests, as well as wide grass fields. Phimai National Museum has a collection of artifacts and displays information on the cultural prosperity of ancient lsan (northeast). The old city of Sema is a city from the Dvaravati period that is 37 kilometres from Nakhon Ratchasima city.

Nong Khai is a tourist city on the bank of the Mekong River bordering the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Tha Sadet is the port for crossing the Mekong River to Tha Dua- in Laos.
