South Africa is a sports-mad nation. Every city (although not every township) has excellent stadium facilities for cricket, athletics, rugby, hockey and soccer. South African sportsmen and women are excellent competitors and winning the Rugby World Cup and the Soccer African Cup of Nations has put South Africa in the international spotlight.
One of the country’s great attractions is that it has one of the highest daily rates of sunshine recorded in the world, which is ideal for staging international tennis and golf tournaments. Golfers from across the globe come to South Africa because of the world-class courses. South Africa’s excellent climate makes golf a year round
attraction. There are over 400 registered courses and some are among the best in the world. Visitors are welcome at most, courses, but it is advisable to call the club secretary and ask for a confirmed starting time and dress codes. Generally, jeans are not permitted on the courses. Brochures and books on South Africa’s courses are available in local bookstores.
The 28 sports events currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee for the Summer Games are available in South Africa and the country has an enviable record of staging some of the world’s most prestigious sports events.
South Africa’s extensive coastline and many rivers and lakes attract a huge number of international competitions relating to water sports, surfing, wind-surfing, canoeing, water-skiing, yachting and angling.
