Mafikengs modern city center is noteworthy for its impressive administration buildings, many of which are decorated with striking contemporary designs, in keeping with its status as capital of the North-West province. Although most of the government buildings are new, the town blends easily into the surrounding areas, which were developed over 100 years ago.
Mafikeng has an international airport, excellent hotels and conference centers, casinos, a university, cultural centers and several good shops. Development during the past few years has been phenomenal, and the city continues to grow rapidly.
The reign of terror known as the difacane (forced migration) launched in the 1820s by the Zulu king, Shaka, led to the establishment of Mafikeng. The difacane resulted in scattering of tribal people throughout Southern Africa.
Mafikeng was the focus of world attention when it was besieged for seven months by Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War, and many places of interest are closely related to this historical event. Colonel Robert Baden-Powell was in charge of the British garrison during the siege, leading to the birth of the international Boy Scout movement in the town (formerly known as Mafiking).
