Mpumalanga - History

Mpumalanga was previously known as the Transvaal and consequently part of the Boer Republic that lasted until 1900. Also previously known as the Eastern Transvaal, it is situated on top of the country's north-eastern escarpment than goes all the way to the edge of the dramatic Blyder River Canyon with it's red sandstone facing the massive gorge.

In the 1880s the massive gold rush that was sweeping the country also happened in Mpumalanga and there are several towns, like Pilgrim's Rest, that attest to it's gold mining past. Most of these smaller towns no longer mine gold and their gold rush/early Victorian architecture make a great overnight stay
