In The City
You might like to begin your
shopping on Orchar road at
Tanglin Mall. It boasts furniture shops,
restaurants, a local retain outlet selling
everything from pillowcases to lamps, a wine
and cigar store, a music shop and not least
royal Sporting House. A
stone's throw away from Tanglin Mall is
Tanglin Place, which contains an up market mountain
bike shop. Rounding up the 'Tanglin'
prefixed shopping centers is Tanglin
Shopping Center where Singapore's largest
collection of Asian antiques, Persian rugs
and antique maps can be found.
For more up market shopping, step into Delfi
Orchard complete with art galleries, Palais
Renaissance or the Nilton shopping Arcade. Shopping
for children can be done at Forum. The
shopping Mall, which boasts a number of
Kids's stores, Book lovers will appreciate
Borders, America's second-largest bookstore,
at Wheelock Place.
British Marks and Spencer can also be found
here. Bargain hunters might want to try Far
East Plaza or Lucky Plaza for sports goods.
Orchard Road also has many one-stop shopping
malls. Like Wisma Atria, where stores such
as Lacoste and World of sports share
floor space with high-end boutiques like
Fendi and giant Japanese retailer, lsetan.
Ngee Ann City also has "everything
under one roof". Here you will find Takashmaya, another Japanese retail giant.
Centrepoint is another which houses Robinsons, Singapore's oldest and award -
winning department store, Marks &
Spencer, leading watch retailer, The
Hour Glass and local bookstore, Times The
Bookshop.
Away from the other one-stop shopping
centers, there are the paragon which carries
flagship stores of renowned brand names like
Escada, Gucci, and The
Heeren which is home to HMV, a
mega music store, Swatch and City Chain,
both watch shops and Electric City, an
electronic superstore.
Contrasting the old-world charm of the
Raffles Hotel Arcade is Raffles City
Shopping Center, winner of the 13th
Tourism Awards 1998, Best
Shopping Experience - shopping Center. One
of the big attractions in this area is Suntec
City Mall, a massive shopping mall
divided into four zones - The Tropics
(lifestyle products and services), The
Entertainment Center (French hypermarket Careefour), The Fountain Terrace
(tantalizing selection of restaurants, pubs
and food court) and The Galleria (high-end
boutiques).
One of Singapore's
most exciting
ethnic enclaves, Chinatown is also
where some of the best shopping can be done,
complete with bargaining with the vendors.
As far as shopping centers are concerned, People's
Park Complex has everything from
electronic goods to textiles while the more
modern Chinatown Point is where you
can locate the Singapore Handicraft Center.
