Singapore is an entrepot for Malaysia, Sumatra Island and other Southeast Asian nations. The chief exports are rubber and tin. The major industries are tin smelting, rubber, lumber shipbuilding, oil refining, chemical products, food, tourism, and banking. Most of the food is imported and only about 1.7 % of the total land is used for farming.

The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) graduated Singapore to the status of a 'developed country' on 1st January 1996. In May 1997 IMF added the four Asian Tigers-Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, to the industrialized countries.
