Seychelles - Museums

In Victoria, you'll find the National Museum on Independence Avenue, the History Museum on State House Avenue and both the National Library and National Archives are on Francis Rachel Street.

National History Museum
This museum on State House Ave has a well-displayed collection of historical Seychelles artifacts. It is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

It exhibits local cultural and natural history along with artifacts including ship wreckage, coral, voodoo implements, stuffed tortoises, old musical instruments and household objects and various possessions of the pirates who once roamed the waters.

SPUP Museum
If you are intrigued by the Seychelles perpetual celebration of revolution and liberation, pop into the Seychelles People's United Party headquarters and museum on Francis Rachel St. There is an exhibition of photography, which covers the history of the party since Rene founded it in 1964. Exhibits include guns and riot shields used to put down early demonstrations and suitcases used in the 1977 coup to overthrow President Mancham. The SPUP has now been replaced by the Seychelles People's Progressive Front SPPF. The museum is open Monday to Friday.

Natural History Museum
The natural history museum is next to the main post office, right in the heart of town. It is open Monday to Friday. At the entrance to the museums is the stone of possession, laid in 1756 by Comeille Nicolas Morphey to commemorate French possession of the islands. The Museum specializes in natural historical items. Inside are some unusual nature exhibits, including bones of the extinct Seychelles crocodile, the giant coconut or robber crabs and some very dried out fish. There are shells, butterflies, stuffed birds, crabs, corals, urchins, turtles, centipedes and scorpions.
