Maldives - Atolls

The Maldives is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved tropical island nations in the world. One hundred and ninety-nine of these islands are inhabited while the rest remain sublimely untouched. The islands are rarely bigger than 1 square mile in total land area and are covered with lush tropical vegetation and tall palm trees.

The Indian Ocean occupies ninety-nine per cent of the country’s entire 34,740 square miles; the remaining 1 per cent is scattered across the vast seas as 1199 islands. These islands are located on 26 atolls, which - for administrative purposes- have been divided into 20. The names of the Atolls are given below. 

Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa, Lhaviyani, Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaalu, Vaavu, Meemu, Faafu, Dhaalu, Thaa, Laamu, Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani, Seenu.
