Driving in India
The general speed limit for cars is 30 Kilo Meters per
hour in the cities. Speeds vary according to road conditions. In India
traffic moves on the left side of the road. Usually in the crowded towns and cities air horns and high beams are
restricted but is often used to warn the pedestrians. In fact driving through the Indian roads is a thrilling experience. All the necessary documents like driving license, tax clearance
and insurance are to be kept ready as the transport authority is very strict in India. Driving after consuming alcohol is strictly prohibited.
During monsoons
many roads, except for a very few trunk roads, can be a mess. It is better to hire a taxi or a car with a driver. The best way to travel in India is by hiring cars or jeeps with drivers if you intend to concentrate on a particular state or region. A car with driver is reasonably priced. The cost varies from state to state. It is very often determined by kilometers traveled and seldom by hours
traveled. Extra amount is charged if you exceed the time or the distance allotted.
In general, about Rs. 8 to Rs. 10 per kilometer for a non-air-conditioned Ambassador is the usual charge in the cities. In many cities metered taxis or
auto-rikshaws are available. In the cities like Calcutta the amount to be paid is the double of the figure that appears in the meter. Toyotas, mini-vans, and Mercedes Benzes are also available at a higher rate. A halt charge of Rs.100
and above per night is also levied if that facility is availed.
