hill stations range from well-known and very
popular resorts such as Mahabaleswar,
Lonavla, Khandla and Mastheran
to small places where hill life has still
not been too impacted by visitors. Mahabaleswar, 200 kilometers from Bombay is
the best-known and most popular Bombay hill
station. From the plateau in Mahabaleswar,
there is a spectacular view over the
surrounding countryside and it is very
popular location with film crews. Matheran
only at 700-800 meters, make the coolest
hill station of the Bombay city. Matheran
has lot of trees and a delightful toy
train.
The twin resort of Lonavla and Khandala
are at an altitude of 625 meters and are
quite popular. Panchagani (five
hills) is a much serene resort. The calm
streets of Panchagani makes a lovely walk
for the tourist. Amboli, the
southernmost hill station in Maharashtra
located at an altitude of 690 meters, boasts
the highest rainfall in the state. Chikhaldhara,
located at an altitude of 1,118 meters, is a
small town with coffee plantations. The hill
station also has an excellent wildlife, in
proximity to the interesting forts of Gawilgad
and Narnala. This is the only
hill station that is part of the geography
of the Western Ghats since it lies in the
range of hills.
