Makarpura
Palace
A beautiful palace designed in the
Italianate style, the Makarpura palace is
now used as a training school of the Indian
Air Force.
Pratap Vilas Palace
at Lalbaugh
Built as the residence of the royal family,
the Pratap Vilas is an extravagant and
flamboyant building in the Indo-Saracenic
style. The palace houses a remarkable
collection of old armory and sculptures in
bronze, marble and terracotta.
Nazarbaugh Palace
Built in the old classical style, the palace
was used on ceremonial occasions by the Gaekwads.
It now houses the royal family heirlooms.
Khavada
It was famous for its handicrafts and cattle
rearing in Banni. Flamingo colony can
be approached from Khavada by road and
thereafter on camel back.
Wankaner Palace
About 50 kilometers from Rajkot on the way
to Kach is the palace of Wankaner, now
converted into a heritage Hotel.
How to get there
Air: Various Airlines operate daily services
connecting Rajkot with Bombay.
Rail: Rajkot is a junction on the Western
Railway, Viramgam-Okha meter gauge line.
Road: State transport buses and private
luxury coaches connects various centers of
Gujarat. It is situated 798 Kilometers from
Bombay via Ahmedabad, 101 Kilometers from
Junagadh, 193 Kilometers from Porbandar and
216 Kilometers from Ahmedabad.
Upar Kot Fort
Famous in bygone times for its virtual
inaccessibility, the Upar Kot or Upper Fort
is girdled by a wall that is, in some
places, over 20 meters high. An ornate
entrance gateway leads to the ruins. A
mosque still stands in a state of
preservation. A Nilamtope (canon) was
acquired by the Nawab of Junagadh from a
Turkish sultan. There are two step-wells,
Jami Masjid and Buddhist caves in the fort
premises.
Pavagadh Fort
The hill of Pavagadh rises from Champaner in
three stages. The plateau at an altitude of
1471 feet and is known as the Machi Haveli.
Oavagadh is 49 Kilometers from Vadodara, and
is also known as the birthplace of Gujarat's
famous musician, Baiju, who preceded Tansen.
