January
Modhera Dance Festival
For three days in January, there
is a romantic fete of Classical dance
against the backdrop of an incredibly
beautiful Sun Temple at Modhera near
Ahmedabad.
The Kite Festival
Kite
flying is a special event in Ahmedabad on Makar
Sankranti day, the beginning of the
northerly journey of the sun (uttarayan).
Although this day is celebrated all over
Gujarat it is celebrated with great gusto in
Ahmedabad. Kite festival is one of the main
festivals in January.
February
Kutch Utsav
This 3-day organized package in
February, which combines the journey into
the lovely destinations with evenings,
filled with the choicest food, dance, music
and craft Kutch is an unforgettable
experience.
March
Chitra Vichitra
In the interior of Sabarkantha, at
Poshina, the tribals get together in
March and you have a fiesta of
extraordinarily ethnic attires, skills,
customs and dance forms.
Somnath Festival
Somnath festival is also celebrated in
March
Dang
Darbar
It
is held on the day before Holi (around
March) at Dangs Adivasi District. The Dangs
is Gujarat's southern most districts
bordering Maharashtra and inhabited by
tribal whose lifestyle is almost the same as
it was thousands of years back. The fair is
comparatively of recent origin. There are
weeklong festivals of tribal dances,
distribution of prizes by tribal chiefs,
etc.
April
Vautha Fair
The fair is held on the 9th
day of Chaitra (around April) at Vautha near
Ahmedabad, to celebrate the confluence of
seven rivers. Pilgrims light small lamps and
set them afloat in the river. There is also
a cattle fair where horses, camels and
donkeys are sold.
September
Tarnetar
At
this exceedingly colorful gathering of most
handsome rural men and women, there is heady
mixture of Gujarat folk dance and music and
a riot of lovely handcrafted umbrellas for 2
days in September every year. Just 3 hours
from Ahmedabad. A distinctive feature of the
Fair is the Tarnetar Chhatri (Umbrella).
These umbrellas are a delightful treat for a
connoisseur of art, meticulously embellished
with art, mirror work, intricate embroidery
and enchanting laceworks
October
Navaratri
This
is a nine-day festival of dedication
of Goddess Amba held from the first
day of Ashvin (around October). It is the
most important and colorful festival of
Gujarat when different forms of the Mother
Goddess are worshipped. People dance the garba
and dandiya ras through the night
in an explosion of colour in all their
traditional finery and garba competitions
are also held.
