The state is ensconced in the corner that it has every topographical features that a region can have; plains plateaus, rivers, hills, deserts and every kinds of landscapes. But it can be divided into three geographical regions; 1. the peninsula or the Saurashtra which is a hilly tract having low mountains, 2. the Rann of Kutch, the famous desert region, 3. the mainland which extends from the Rann of Kutch to the river Daman - Ganga which is a whole level plain of alluvial soil.

The state is in the extreme north of the west coast of India. The state makes the first southern border with Pakistan. To the north is Rajasthan and the eastern border is with the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The whole south of the state is the peninsular region that coasts with the Arabian Sea.
