- Pondicherry
|
|
 Pondicherry,
the former French colony of the early 18th
century, is a charming and enduring pocket
of French culture set beside the sea. The
French connection, the peaceful atmosphere
of urban Pondicherry influenced by the
Aurobindo Ashram, the beach, Auroville
combine to make this a fascinating
destination.

The seventy-year-old Ashram is situated at
Rule de la Marine with the flower-festooned
Samadhi (tomb) of Aurobindo and 'The Mother'
in it. Frequent cultural programmes are
presented here. Visitors with a genuine
interest in the place and its philosophy are
welcome. The Ashram is popular among Indians
and westerners alike and is the last word in
the educational and cultural activities of Pondicherry. The Bengal based revolutionary
freedom fighter, Aurobindo Ghose when
realized that it was unwise to live under
the British, took shelter at the then French
headquarters at Pondicherry.
