The two important river systems of Karnataka are the Krishna and its tributaries (Bhima, Ghataprabha and Vedavati) in the north and the Kaveri and its tributaries (Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavati, Lekshmana Thirtha and Kabini) in the south, besides these, a number of smaller rivers flow westward into the Arabian Sea. Of these, Sharavati, Kalinadi and Netravati are important.
