Religion
Hindus form the majority. The Christians of
Kanara are among the oldest converts to the
faith. It is believed that the Konkani
speaking peoples (Saraswath &
Saraswath Goud Brahmins) ancestors were
Kashmiri Pundits. To escape from the
Portuguese attack they fled to Goa where
they embraced Christianity. Later they came
to be known as Mangalore Christians.
