Uttaranchal, the 27th State was formed on 9 November 2000. Uttaranchal may only have 17 per cent of Uttar Pradesh in geographical area but it is the golden goose in terms of tourism and forest product. Holy shrines like Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, and resorts like Nainital and Mussorie attracts 83 million tourists in a year. Haridwar and its Kumbha Melas earn Rs. 1, 500 crore revenue annually from tourism. Six of the seven national parks of former UP are now under Uttarakhand. Annual earnings from the forest products are Rs. 135 crore. The rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sharada generate resources for hydroelectric power to the tune of 1000 MW.
