Chandigarh, the
capital of both Punjab and Haryana, is the only Indian city to
have been designed and planned by a single architect Le
Corbusier. The city, a model of wide roads and spacious
residential colonies, is an excellent base for specialized
sightseeing, and for visiting Sukhna Lake, Pinjore Gardens, the
Rose Garden and the Rock Garden. The city of Chandigarh lies in
the valley surrounded by Shiwalik Hills that hem the great
Himalayas. From here one can travel northwards to the hill
resorts of Shimla Kulu, Manali, Dharmashala and Dalhousie.
Chandigarh is not only the most modern city in the country but
has been planned to perfection by the world famous French
architect le Corbusier.
Chandigarh, derives its name from a
temple Chandi Mandir in the
vicinity of the site selected for the city (deity Chandi,
goddess of power), and a fort or garh" beyond the temple,
called Chandigarh... Chandigarh connects to almost all of the tourist places in the
north and so acts like a gateway to the major tourist
attractions in the northern region. For a visitor to north India
it is inevitable but to stay in Chandigarh and spend a few days.
Being a modern city it also caters to the needs of the visitors.
It has services like car rentals, tourist information offices,
travel agents, major banking institutions, and innumerable
hotels and restaurants. There are other important facilities
like cyber cafes, which are not available at most of the tourist
places. Therefore, a visitor has to get back to the city to get
connected back to the modern world. Since the city beautiful is
at an approachable distance from the rest of the tourist spots,
it is an ideal place for a visitor to base himself and plan his
onward journey.
