A
land of culture and heritage...the heritage
that begins with the historical remains of Gour
& Pandua, off Malda. These bear
testimony to the glorious ancient period of
Bengal. The journey goes on to Vinshnupur,
which is the seat of the only living
classical music gharana of Bengal, the
fabled Balchari saris, and the incredible
terracotta temples and the vibrant
terracotta handicrafts of Bengal. The world
famous Bankura horses hail from here.
You can visit village after village of
artists creating pottery on baked clay. The
heritage tour moves on to Murshidabad, the
seat of government of the Nawabs of Bengal.
The marvelous Hazardurai Palace is
situated in this place. The antiques and
artifacts at Hazarduari are worth more than
a visit to this historic city. Cultural
effervescence can be seen abloom at Shantiniketan, the institution built by the
universal poet and philosopher, Guru Rabindra
Nath Tagore. Srirampur and Chandannagore
are testimonies to the imprint of Dutch and
French forays into Bengal.
Belur Math is the world famous
heritage and retreat that Swami Vivekananada
built. Calcutta bears the stamp of a city
that has witnessed three centuries of
cultural mingling. The old merges with the
new, the Saracenic blends with the
Victorian, the past shows through the
present...the Marble Palace, the
fabled Indian Museum, the National Library,
the singular Victoria Memorial, the
colossal Raj Bhavan, the inexplicable
charm of the Writers Buildings, now
housing the Government of the State, the
landmark Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge) that
has come to stand for Calcutta and the East,
the delicate tapestry of the Vidyasgar Setu
(2nd Hooghly Bridge), the Hooghly
Gardens, the old-fashioned bazaars, the
shopping plazas, the period tram cars or the
swank Metro railways.
Calcutta
is a kaleidoscope that shows India in its
true colors, ever changing, ever still...of
change....continuity in change and stillness
in continuity.
