India - West Bengal

West Bengal has two extremely different social and cultural environments in the Northern and the Southern parts. While in the northern parts there is a close cultural shade from Nepal. So one experiences a wide contrast while traveling from the north to the south of the state.

 To a great extend the whole of West Bengal at is contemplated by the name Calcutta. But the remnants of the royal pedigree of the state can be traced among the ruins around Murshidabad and Cooch Bihar to a Calcutta City great measure. Dominique and Lappiere describe Calcutta in their work "City of Joy" with its minute details. It has a grand culture, a long, digressive history and a bunch of beaten traditions. However, sifting the splendor from the 300-year-old dust is a marvelous experiment.

The largest swamp wild life in the world, Sunderbans is one of the major attractions in the southern part of the state of West Bengal. This mangrove swamps is prowled by man-eating Royal Bengal Tigers and the sea there is shared by sharks and crocodiles. For a visit there, a special permit from the Forestry department (in Calcutta) is mandatory.
