West Bengal has two extremely different social and cultural environments in the Northern and the Southern parts. While in the northern parts there is a close cultural shade from Nepal. So one experiences a wide contrast while traveling from the north to the south of the state.

 To a great extend the whole of West Bengal at is contemplated by the name Calcutta. But the remnants of the royal pedigree of the state can be traced among the ruins around Murshidabad and Cooch Bihar to a great measure. Dominique and Lappiere describe Calcutta in their work "City of Joy" with its minute details. It has a grand culture, a long, digressive history and a bunch of beaten traditions. However, sifting the splendor from the 300-year-old dust is a marvelous experiment.

In the north one can cherish the exhilarating view of world's highest mountain ranges reaching its zenith. The hill stations in Darjeeling and Kurseong in the region are the hot spots for tourists' cool retreats.
