India - Bihar

Bihar is like a jewel in the crown of India. Nationally the state is connected to the most prestigious tourist circuits in the east. It's a land affluent in natural beauty, whispering forests, sparkling lakes, peaceful hill resorts, majestic forts and palaces, holy rivers, cascading waterfalls, natural hot springs etc. It is steeped in religion and grooved with ancient paths of pilgrimage. The state has a culture visited, revisited and chronicled by renowned travelers from China and the West.

Bihar  is  as old  as civilization  itself.  It is glorious, colorful and ancient a land. Here lived the mythological king Janaka of Videha, vedic period Rishi Yangyabalka, Ramayan famed Maharshi Valmiki and Kautilya, the author of Arthashastra, the first treatise on modern economics. This had been the land where great religious leaders like Buddha, Mahavir and Nanak were born and great kings like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka and Sher Sah ruled. Here in the land flourished the ancient seats of learning - Nalanda and Vikramshila. `Ahimsa' was propagated from here and Gandhiji launched his civil-disobedience movement against the mighty British. This is the land of great Madhubani paintings, enchanting Sujuni work, Bhagalpuri silks and plenty of delicious Leechies and Mangoes.

Art and Culture

Bihar's rural handicrafts comprise of hand-painted wall hangings, wooden stools, miniatures in paper and leaves, stone pottery, bamboo, leather goods, and appliquι work. But Bihar's most famous and fascinating indigenous art form is its Madhubani school of painting, a strict monopoly of the women of Mithila. THE ANCIENT SEAT OF LEARNING 

Towards   the  Southeast  of  Patna is a village called the 'Bada Gaon', in the vicinity of which, are the world famous ruins of Nalanda University. Housing about 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers, this university attracted pupils from all over the world. A Walk in the ruins of the university, takes you to an era, which saw India leading in imparting knowledge, to the world - the era when India was a coveted place for studies. The university flourished during the 5th and 12th century.
