Australia - People

Australia is a multicultural nation. The Aborigines were the first inhabitants. Now they make up only 1.5 per cent of the population. While many people have Anglo-Celtic roots, there are a large number of Australians from a variety of nationalities, from German to Greek (Melbourne has the largest Greek population outside of Greece), Latvian to Latin American, Cambodian to Chinese.

Over 19 million people reside in Australia. The population density is 2.4 people per square kilometer, the lowest in the world after Mongolia. Approximately 88 per cent of the people live in urban areas, with most people living in coastal cities, the largest of which is Sydney in the state of New South Wales.
