Tasmania - Hobart

Hobart, capital of Tasmania is Australia's smallest and the second oldest city. A riverside city with a busy harbor, its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the suburbs below. Its beautiful Georgian buildings, relaxed atmosphere, numerous parks and attractive homes make Hobart one of the most enjoyable of Australia's cities.

27 km north-east of Hobart is Richmond, a delightful Georgian village with Australia's oldest bridge. The best of Tasmania's art and crafts are on sale in the many sandstone buildings.
New Norfolk, 38 km north of Hobart is famous for its hop fields and turn of the century architecture. The town was first settled in 1807 by convicts brought from Norfolk Island. Take an exciting devil jet boat ride on the Derwent River, bushwalk in the magnificent Mount Field National park area and find out how an Australian sheep property works at the Hamilton Sheep Center.
Visit the Huon Valley about 45 minutes south of the city. Visitors can explore the area stopping by apple, berry and cherry orchards, oyster and salmon farms. Roadside stands sell fresh produce.

Attractions
Salamanca Place
The beautiful sandstone warehouses on the harborfront at Salamanca Place is a fine example of Australian colonial architecture. These warehouses were the center of Hobart Town's trade and commerce in the 1830s. Today they have been developed to house galleries, restaurants, nightspots and shops selling everything from vegetables to antiques.

Battery Point
Battery Point, the old port area, is the historic core of Hobart. This waterfront precinct was first settled in 1804.During colonial times, this area was a colorful maritime village, home to master mariners, shipwrights, sailors, fishermen, coopers and merchants.

Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery
The excellent Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery incorporates Hobart's oldest building, the Commissariat Store, built in 1808. It has an outstanding collection of colonial art and exhibitions displaying the cultural and natural history of Tasmania.

Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens
These beautiful gardens, situated only 2km away from the city center, were established in the early 1800s and feature a fine collection of exotic and native plants.
