Sports
Mauritius offers marvelous facilities for the water sports enthusiast. In many hotels windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, and water skiing are provided free to hotel guests, with free instructions for beginners, while only diving and big-game fishing are charged for.
Yachting
Sailing conditions are excellent. Most hotels provide
small boats for the use of their guests within the lagoon. Large sailboats that are suitable for excursions into the open sea can be chartered.
Diving
Most of the large hotels include skin-diving on their list of sports activities. Skin-diving instruction is available too. Marvelous coral gardens are found at a depth of 254
meters. The waters around Mauritius are home to over a thousand different species of fish. Spear fishing and the collection of shells, corals, fishers are strictly prohibited.
Spectator
Sports
Of outstanding interest for visitors is horse racing, at
the Champ de Mars in Port Louis. The season is from May to
November, and the main meetings are held at the end of May
and in August, Mauritius Derby Day is the Maiden
Plate, run in late August. Other popular sports are
soccer, lawn, gold, basketball, volleyball and athletics.

hotels have a clubhouse with practice nets and a store
room for guests golf equipment, Pros attend to the

Practice balls, clubs and trolleys are on hire at the

Gymkhana Club in Vacoas is the only private club with a
18-hole golf course. Visitors may have temporary access to
the golf course by paying an admission fee.
