Highlights
A respite in the comforts of Woodville is a beautiful memory, which a visitor will not easily forget. Woodville Palace has a history dating back to 1866 when Sir William Mansfield, Commander-in-Chief of the imperial army became the first resident of the charming estate. In 1926, His Highness Maharaja Sir Bhagvat Singh of Gondal State in Western Indian purchased the property for his daughter, Princess Leila. In 1938, the old Victorian building was demolished by her husband, Raja Rana Sir Bhagat Chand, the ruler of Jubbal State. In its place, the present magnificent summer palace was constructed at a cost of Rupees Five Hundred Thousand. It was Kanwar Uday Singh, who converted Woodville Palace into a heritage hotel in 1977. At present, the first floor of the hotel is occupied by his family while the rest of the building is open to visitors.

Location
Woodville Palace is situated in Raj Bhawan Road, Shimla at an altitude of 7000 feet, far away from the sweltering plains of northern India. It became popular with the British in the 1830s and later became the summer capital of the imperial government. Enticed by its salubrious character, the British ended up spending more time at this 'hill station' than at the real capital, Calcutta. Today, it is the state capital of Himachal Pradesh and holds the lingering echoes of a bygone era. The airport is at Jubbarhatti, 23 km from Shimla town, and is connected to Chandigarh, Kullu and Delhi. Shimla is connected by road to all major centers of north India.
