Under the reign of the great King Rajaraja, founder of the Chola empire which stretched over all of south India and its neighboring islands, the great Temple of Tanjore (Thanjavur), dedicated to Lord Shiva was constructed between 1003 and 1010. Surrounded by two rectangular enclosures, the Brihadisvar, built from blocks of granite and, in part, from bricks, is crowned with a pyramidal 13-storey tower, the vimana, 61 meters high and topped with a bulb-shaped monolith. The walls of the temple are covered in rich sculpted decoration. The temple is also called the 'Big Temple'.

Executive Editor Praveen Ram was recently on a trip to this fascinating place and has filed this Photo Essay. 'The place still breathes the very legend it carries and has an overwhelming capacity to carry the onlooker to a period which doesn't relate to the world outside' says him.
